Vietnam possibly hosts AFF Cup 2020?
The complex development of covid 19 could make AFF Cup organisers change its formats.
Specifically, AFF Cup will follow the same format as in 2018 with home and away matches. Both qualifiers, semis and finals will be played fairly at home and away.
AFC announced the schdule of AFF Cup will follow as planned (between Nov 23 and Dec 31) but the context of Covid 19 made the organizers change the plan.
Accordingly, the tournament could use the old format, which each country will host 1 group matches: 5 teams will play in a group, 2 top teams advance to the semis following home-away format.
Or the tournament will be held in only 1 country, from the qualifiers to the final.
Currently most countries restrict international routes, and the health regulations are also very strict. Meanwhile, from now until the end of the year, there is no guarantee that the disease will be controlled because many countries still have relatively complicated movements. Especially when the vaccine has not yet been produced. Certainly, the organizers will have to plan many different competitions for the AFF Cup to take place as expected.
Following the old format, the teams will benefit not to move too much but without many spectators.
Another problem that AFF Cup leader are anxious is the old format will greatly affect the revenue from sponsors. With the tournament taking place in many countries like the AFF Cup 2018, the sponsor's spread will be higher, attracting more businesses to invest in the tournament. In 2018, nearly one billion spectators came to the field to watch the matches live.
This will be a good opportunity for Vietnam if they decides to organize the tournament in a country. Vietnam is one of the few countries that have good disease control, so it will be the most potential candidate to host the tournament safely.
