V-League runner-up Ho Chi Minh City is negotiating to bring Vietnamese-American midfielder Lee Nguyen to play in the 2020 season.

"We are negotiating to recruit Lee Nguyen. However, we are not sure when he will dock in HCMC club," chairman Nguyen Huu Thang said on February 15. "The current problem is financial issues, and due to negotiations, we cannot share in detail."

According to VnExpress, Lee Nguyen's transfer fee can be up to millions of dollars, and the 34-year-old player also requires very high wages.

Lee Nguyen used to play for HAGL in the 2009-2010 season, then bid farewell to join Binh Duong in the 2010-2011 season.

Lee Nguyen, 34, after two years of playing football in Vietnam, criticized V-League for violence, so he returned to the United States to develop his career. He then joined the New England Revolution Club from 2012-2018, playing 191 matches, scoring 51 goals. In the 2018-2019 season, he played for Los Angeles FC, played 58 matches, scored three goals.

Currently, 33-year-old Vietnamese-born player belongs to Inter Miami, the club is owned by David Beckham.

Lee Nguyen used to wear the U20 team and the US national team, so he could not represent the Vietnam national team although he has dual citizenship Vietnam and the United States. "If the deal is successful, Lee Nguyen will play for Ho Chi Minh City as a domestic player," Thang said.

The deadline to close the list of players in the V-League is on February 8. But by delaying the opening day due to the Covid-19 epidemic, the organizers could extend the time for the final list.
