AFF Cup 2020 will not be postponed as rumored

AFF and Suzuki Motor Corporation have recently renewed sponsorship contracts for the AFF Cup, confirming that the tournament is still underway.

Due to the influence of the Covid-19 epidemic, the World Football Association (FIFA) as well as the Asian Football Federation (AFC) had to postpone the 2022 World Cup qualifiers. but rumors are expected that matches will play around October and November.

This greatly affects the AFF Cup 2020 as there will be a high possibility of overlapping schedules. Recently the Southeast Asian Football Federation (AFF), however, has released about the re-signing of sponsorship contracts with Suzuki Motor Corporation.

In his statement, AFF president Khiey Sameth reaffirmed that the AFF Cup will still take place as planned.

"The AFF Suzuki Cup unites the friendship of regional countries through football, which is one of the most important events of world football. Similar to previous seasons, we will once again welcome more fans on the stadiums as well as millions of fans watching on television. We are excited and looking forward to the 13th season of this prestigious tournament."

Sponsor Suzuki Motor Corporation has been with the tournament since 2008 and this is the 7th consecutive time they appear in the name of this tournament. Since the establishment of the tournament in 1996, AFF has been the organizer and is recognized by FIFA. Matches in the tournament will be graded on FIFA Ranking.

Thailand possesses the biggest number of championships with 5 times in 1996, 2000, 2002, 2014 and 2016. Currently Vietnam is the reigning champion and Park aims to defend  the championship at the end of the year.​
